Admission of Guilt – Yes, I do it.

Well, it’s time.  Time I admitted something.

I’ve been holding this back for a long time.  Sometimes, it’s just too hard to bear.  The weight of it on my conscience is killing me.

Here it is.

I read Hints from Heloise in the newspaper each day.

I can’t help it.  I’m addicted.  It’s like a train wreck that you just can’t turn away from.  Just who are these people that write in with hints that are so stupid, so friggin elementary?

I’ve been composing a letter to her, I keep working on it here and there.  If you get the chance, you might help with it:

Dear Heloise:
I have had a problem the last few years and have finally found a solution.  When my garbage disposal would get clogged or when I dropped something into it that I didn’t mean to get ground up like hamburger, I often forgot to turn it off before sticking my hand in to retrieve the object.  As a result, my right hand is mangled and I’m missing all my fingers.  It didn’t happen all at once, the longest was the first to go, and after that, one by one, inch by inch, I’ve wound up with a nub on my right hand.
After I couldn’t grasp anything, I found myself sticking my other hand in while it was still running.  I’ve come up with a perfect solution.  I had tattooed on my right hand across the scars on the nub “Turn off disposer before reaching inside”.
It’ works like a charm!  When I use my nub to push the faucet open, I see it every time.  This has saved me from a lifetime of having to depend on someone else to scratch an itch!  I still have 3 fingers on the left hand and plan on keeping them now!

Unexpected expenses

So, yesterday I was working at home and the doorbell rang.  This is a HIGHLY unusual occurrence.  Neighbors know I work from home and don’t bother me during the day.  Friends and family know to call first.  I’m just that way.

I run upstairs, dog following behind, to find the water meter reader at my door.  This can’t be good.

Seems there is a large leak in the line from the meter to the house.  We’ve been pulling 70 gallons an hour since about the 13th of last month.

Water company won’t give us a break on the usage-bill will be over $700 (normally $65).  It’s gonna cost $300 to have someone locate the leak, and an untold amount to have a plumber repair it.

This is a perfect example of an unexpected homeowner expense.  This is also a PRIME example of why I hate to see people buy homes that have no financial reserves.  A $1200 unexpected expense can throw someone without any reserves into a financial tailspin.  We are fortunate that we have some reserves.

For those of you who are getting down payment gifts and wanting sellers to pay all your closing costs because you have no savings – are you really ready for the financial obligations that come with owning a home?  What’s going to happen when something like this happens to you?

Saturday

Work done for the day. Wonder if I can motivate TBH to get out and do something enjoyable. I’ll probably end up installing baseboards.

Grow up, get over it, move on, and do your best

I’m getting so old!  And just how appropriate is that statement (my birthday is in less than a week)!

I was thinking this morning about all the changes that have happened in my life in just the last year – then I looked over the past 5, 10, 20 years.  I’ve often joked about being bald, but when I really think about it, I know why.

I remember speaking at my high school graduation.  My topic was change.  I was excited about growing up and graduating, but I was also apprehensive about the uncertainty of the future.  I actually quoted the bible (this was rural Arkansas after all) 1 Corinthians 13:11-12:

11  When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12  For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

I’m not a theologian by any stretch of the imagination.  I tend to read things and seek out the simplest possible meaning.  Lazy?  Possibly.  I’ve already lost too many brain cells of the few I ever had to try and interpret the hundreds of possible meanings in anything written or spoken.  I speak that way too.  BLURT!  There its is.  No BS, no frills.  You get what you pay for from me.

So, my interpretation of that verse?  Grow up, get over it, move on and do your best.

So, here I am 23 years later (has it been 23 years since graduation?) and I sometimes still remind myself to move on and do your best.  In fact, it seems I have to remind myself MORE now than then!

I’m the type of person that likes things to go smoothly.  I don’t like confrontation, I loathe interruption, and I enjoy simplicity.  For those of you who follow astrology, you’ll find it not surprising I’m a Libra.  I’m a TOTAL Libra.  I’m all about balance.  When I’m unbalanced, I’m useless.  I mean completely useless.  I “vapor-lock.”  I stall.  I become a breathing doorstop.

So, this year has been the year of maintaining balance for me.  My real estate career finally took off and I’m doing well at it – but it has been at the cost of my home life.  I’m EXTREMELY fortunate that I have someone that understands and has been taking up the slack without complaint.  I’m having to make adjustments in my work-life in order to regain some of that balance with my home-life.  It’s difficult, but I’m slowly gaining the skills to do so.

My dad passed this year.  It’s weird with him not being around.  He’d been sick a long time.  It’s strange having only one parent left.  I’m adjusting to that.

My Broker is wisely making some decisions right now.  He’s “dissolving” our office and we’re merging with another local office.  Personally, I like the idea.  I think it’s a sound decision.  Having said that, I’m NOT looking forward to all the details involved in the actual switch.  I’m signed up on hundreds of websites for my real-estate business and now I have to change all of them one-by-one.  I have to recreate my own website.  I’ve even had to redo this blog.

There have been a lot of other little changes as well, but they’ve been disproportionately small.  I’ve got a lot of work to do, and a short time to get it done.  So, for the next few weeks, if you catch me staring into space or call me and I sound like I’ve just woke up, feel free to prod me with a stick and remind me to grow up, get over it, move on and do my best.

You never know what’s behind the door….

I’ve mentioned before, I’m an REO Realtor.  I mainly sell foreclosed homes.

Yesterday, I get a call from one of the companies I list for and they wanted me to take on a new listing.  Home had just foreclosed that morning.  I know the drill…

1) check to see if it’s occupied
2) if vacant, gain access, determine amount of personal property left, take photos
3) rekey, get utilities on, order trashout if necessary.

So, I proceed to the house (surprisingly, I was only about a half mile away from it when I got the call) and find this:

Wow I thought – a good one – appears fairly well kept, flowerbeds could use some sprucing up, but otherwise this will be a nice one.

Then, I opened the door.

Apparently, the dogs owned the house.  EVERY door frame and door is scratched and chewed up.  EVERY room has holes in the carpet from dogs tearing it up.  The ENTIRE house smelled like animal urine.

This may be a tough one.  Just goes to prove you can’t judge a book by it’s cover–or a home by it’s facade.
