Some people just don’t listen….

We’ve been making our transition to being a Crye-Leike office this week.  Sounds easy enough – right?  Not so much.

Don’t get me wrong – this post isn’t negative about Crye-Leike…so far, I like it.  This post is about people….more specifically, those that don’t listen – or don’t have any sense of urgency.

When I got to the office yesterday, I found out they had switched over the network to a Crye-Leike network the night before.  They hadn’t switched over our connections though.  Where was our support?  He had stopped by to chat-up our Office Administrator for a bit before heading off to get breakfast.  Meanwhile, it took me 20 minutes to get my desktop to be more than a doorstop by getting it connected through the new network.

Then my Outlook would receive, but not send.  Another 30 minutes to get the correct SMTP and advanced settings sleuthed out so I could communicate with the Universe.

Meanwhile, the world didn’t stop.  I was still taking calls and dealing with clients, customers, other Realtors, plumbers, utility companies, asset managers, title companies and lenders - all while helping others in the office get their settings modified.

I still couldn’t connect to the office printer.  It was almost 2:00 pm before that ever got fixed.  And that experience just nailed down my belief that some people just don’t listen.

I.T. GUY:  I don’t know why that driver isn’t working.  Let’s delete some printer ports, reboot, and then it should work.
ME:  That printer driver isn’t compatible with my OS.
I.T. GUY:  No, that’s not it, for some reason it’s trying to use the wrong port.
ME:  That printer driver isn’t compatible with my OS.
I.T. GUY:  Deleting the ports and then rebooting will work.
ME:  No, that printer driver isn’t compatible with my OS.
I.T. GUY:  Here, let me sit down and work on this.
ME:  No, this is my computer and YOU’RE.NOT.TOUCHING.IT.
I.T. GUY:  Let me call someone and see if they can help.
ME:  You go do that.

I’ve had more successful conversations with asparagus.

5 minutes later, I walk past I.T. GUY.
ME:  (nonchalantly) “Nevermind, I fixed it.”
I.T. GUY:  How did you do it?
ME: I installed the printer driver that’s compatible with my OS.
I.T. GUY:  There’s a different printer driver?
ME:  (at this point, I said nothing verbally, but the “poison-eye darts” I shot must have hit them squarely between their eyes).

They promptly packed up their thumb drives into their pocket protectors, removed their bluetooth headsets and left.

They also had interconnected all the company owned computers with a shared drive where a bunch of things can be in a central database.  They failed to give any of those company owned computers “rights” to access this shared drive.  They could see it, but not get anything to or from it.  Calls had to be made to get that fixed.

Granted, these guys probably aren’t tasked with changeovers often.  Most of the time, they have built an office from ground-up and start it off fresh – but come on!
